Simply put, the office of the Sheriff belongs to the people of Perry County. In 2000, I was hired by the Hazard Police Department as a patrolman. I quickly advanced through the ranks and was appointed Deputy Chief of Police in 2006, the position I held until being elected by you. In my experience as deputy chief, I became very familiar with managing multi-million dollar annual budgets, leading men and women in law enforcement, and most importantly, considering the needs of our community in relation to law enforcement. For many years I have utilized community oriented policing as a guiding force while serving the citizens of Hazard and Perry County. I realize that it is you to whom I am ultimately responsible in answering to and, as your Sheriff, I will continue to take this responsibility serious and further give it the respect that such a relationship truly deserves. It is my privilege to serve you.

As part of an ongoing program emphasizing strong communication with the public he serves, Sheriff Joseph Engle is providing monthly reports to the media and the Perry County Fiscal Court regarding his office’s productivity. The Office of the Perry County Sheriff is committed to serving our community with honor, courage, and integrity, while enhancing the quality of life in our community. I am proud to lead our uniformed deputies and dedicated civilian personnel as they work every day to provide professional service to the citizens of Perry County.

The Office of the Perry County Sheriff is committed to providing a high level of quality service. We seek to serve the citizens of Perry County with integrity, honesty, fairness and pride.  We are responsible for a wide variety of duties, including, but not limited to law enforcement services, property tax collection, election duties, motor vehicle inspections, funeral and parade escorts, and service to the Perry County Civil and Criminal Courts. In addition to these activities we provide security and staff Rescource Safety Officers (RSO's) for the various schools of the Perry County Board of Education and the Hazard Independent School System.  The Administrative Office of the Sheriff is open Monday - Friday 8am to 4pm. We are located at 481 Main Street, Suite 200, Hazard, Ky. (2nd floor of the old Perry County Court House).
