Perry Plaza development, located in Hazard, KY is a new commercial development ideally suited for shopping center, restaurants, hotels and other retail outlets. Phase 1 is equipped with at 12 inch sewer line, 8 inch water line, electrical service, and natural gas. This phase is approximately 30 acres and lots can be configured and sized to buyers' needs. The site is located on Highway 80, very near to the intersection with Highway 15. Near by attractions include the City of Hazard, Appalachian Regional Hospital, the University of Kentucky Center for Rural Health, and the Daniel Boone Plaza (includes Walmart and Lowes).
Average traffic count for this property is 11,000 cars per day. Perry County has 28,000 residents but a much larger shopping area as it serves Leslie, Knott, Letcher, Breathitt and other surrounding counties of over 100,000 residents.

Perry Plaza is Perry County's newest development area
PERRY COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - In early July a rumor on social media made the rounds, alerting people to a possible shopping development along Highway 80 in Perry County. At the time, city officials did not want to get people's hopes up. Now, the project that seemed dead in the water has new life. "This doesn't totally finalize it, we're not totally in the game, but without it, it couldn't have happened, but it definitely gets us closer," said Perry County Judge Executive Scott Alexander. The Appalachian Regional Commission is dedicating $1.2 million in funding to sewage and infrastructure at land near East Perry Elementary. The shopping center has been in the works for more than two years, and county officials now think there is a good chance it may finally happen. "This is another huge community project that we have worked with the City of Hazard, with the representative and senator both the state and federal officials on, this is another true teamwork project of trying to move this project forward," said Alexander. Alexander tells WYMT there is an 85-90 percent chance the shopping center will be built but warns there are still other hurdles to be cleared before the project is a done deal.
Perry County gets grant for Perry Plaza infrastructure
Local government officials have confirmed, in the wake of an announcement that the county will receive more than $1.2 million in funding, that a new shopping development is being planned for Perry County. The Department for Local Government (DLG) announced Aug. 27 that the Perry County Fiscal Court will receive $1,254,320 in Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) Distressed Counties funding.
The ARC Distressed Counties Program provides funding for designated counties to develop projects aimed at strengthening communities. The DLG said currently, 84 counties across eight states qualify for distressed county status based on per capita income and rates of poverty and unemployment, and 37 of those counties are in Kentucky.
The grant allocation is being given to help fund public infrastructure necessary for the development of a planned 30-acre commercial site east of Hazard off of Ky. 80, said officials with the DLG. This will include installation of water lines, sanitary sewer lines, storm drains and natural gas lines.
Perry County Judge-Executive Scott Alexander said that the project has been in the planning phase for a few years already and he is excited to see some progress in the project. “It will get people coming back to Perry County to do their shopping and it will also help existing businesses,” said Alexander, explaining that it will help existing business have the chance to do business with new customers. The center will be made up of stores and restaurants that the county does not already have, he said. Alexander said the exact businesses could not be confirmed as of presstime, however, they have received multiple letters of intent from the businesses during the writing of the grant, he said.
While the county officials are excited about the progress being made, they do want people to know it will still take time for the project to be completed. “This is the first step in the process of making this (Begley Center) happen,” Alexander said. “It is the first step of several steps before this is completed, we won’t complete this and the stores be ready. It takes a couple years once we’re done with infrastructure for the building process to be completed,” Alexander continued. Alexander said he estimates the project to take 24-36 months to see new developments in the shopping development area.
Other officials expressed their hope for the project and what it can mean for the community. “Eastern Kentucky residents have demonstrated extraordinary resilience as the economy has shifted in recent years,” said state Rep. Chris Fugate. “I’m pleased to see these federal dollars directed toward development of this new commercial site and the opportunities that will come with it.”
The DLG said this project is a collaboration between Perry County Fiscal Court and the City of Hazard and is projected to create more than 200 permanent, full-time jobs and around 90 temporary construction jobs. “The positive impact of this project will be felt immediately in Perry County and the surrounding areas, as the development of this commercial site will generate jobs and spur economic development in the region,” said DLG Commissioner Sandra K. Dunahoo.
Hazard Fazoli's breaks company record for first week sales
HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT/WKYT) - The new Fazoli's in Hazard set a record for the fast-casual Italian chain. The Lexington based restaurant says the Hazard location had the most successful first week in the company's history. The first week, Fazoli's say they made $105,000 in sales, which is more than the $100,000 previous record. More than 12,000 people were served during the first week. "We are thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive response Hazard and the surrounding communities have had to our grand opening," franchisee Brian Couch said. The location in Hazard is part of the chain's plan to open seven additional locations nationwide this year. So, far they have already opened five, including the Hazard location. The company now says it has 220 restaurants in 27 states.
Steak 'n Shake Opens
HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Steak 'n Shake officially open in Perry County June 17, 2019 following a ribbon cutting ceremony.
"Those people work here, they live here, they'll spend their money here, it's just a great day," said Perry County Judge-Executive Scott Alexander.Officials say this will bring 85 jobs to the area, a key in bringing more business, people and pride back to the region.
"We're going to focus on today and hope we have a great crowd," said Scott and Kim King, owners of the Steak 'n Shake.
The key to scoring the restaurant was pitching it not just for Hazard and Perry County, but for the surrounding counties as well.
"Well you know when we first started this we told steak n shake corporate that this isn't just for Hazard. Hazard pulls from Knott, it pulls from Breathitt, Letcher, Leslie, and that was a factor for them also," said King.
Steak 'n Shake is open from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. every day of the week.
